Yet, the number of firms included in major deal syndicates is shrinking, access to deals by minority owned firms is increasingly difficult and issuers are finding more reasons to stay the course with their customary banking sources. Are the gains won during the last decade in underwriting opportunities for broker dealer firms of color in jeopardy? The panel would explore success stories in recent issuances featuring significant minority firm inclusion (GE,GMAC,NYSE), factors which are helping to determine the shape of underwriting syndicates today (Merrill, Goldman, Dardens) and offer ideas as to how to promote and ensure better access to deals by minority owned firms, including the role, if any, of minority corporate directors.

SESSION IV: MARSHALLING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS IN MUSIC, TV AND FILM IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM – COPYRIGHT, TRADEMARKS, PATIENTS
This session will focus on how African-Americans can maximize the potential for profits with intellectual property rights in the media arts. African-Americans have traditionally not received their fair share of the multi-billion dollar entertainment industry profits this is largely due to lack of ownership of intellectual property rights. This panel will focus on how intellectual property rights can be marshaled and maximized for profits for both the up-and-coming artist, author, creator or inventor as well as established the artist, author, creator or inventor. The panel will deal with legal and business issues, including ownership strategies, licensing, new revenue options for the new millennium as well as venture capital possibilities. The talent of African-Americans that is expressed in music, film and tv is a commodity -- much like gold and diamonds -- and we must learn how to maximize and manage these intellectual property rights for profits and creative control as we move into the new millennium. This panel will deal with copyright termination rights, licensing and acquisition of copyright, trademark and patent properties and maximizing intellectual property rights for profit potential. For far too long African-Americans have not leveraged these intellectual property rights and others have made gains at the expense of our community and the individual creators.
